A cold start alternator drive belt noise condition is possible on some 1998 Eclipse and Galant vehicles equipped with the 2.0L (4G63) and 2.4L (4G64) engines.
The alternator drive belt on some affected vehicles may slip and make a squealing noise during cold start. A different alternator belt is available to correct this condition.
Referring to Section 16 of the appropriate service manual, replace the original alternator drive belt with P/N MD186124.
Using the following values, adjust the alternator drive belt tension. Refer to "On Vehicle Service" in Section 11A of the appropriate service manual.
· Use a tension gauge to measure and adjust belt tension using the value 588-784 Nm (132-176 lbs.)
· Or, apply a force of 98 Nm (22 lbs.) to the area indicated, then measure and adjust deflection to 5.8-7.4 mm (0.23-0.29 in.).
Note: Always adjust the alternator belt with the engine cold.
