C/K Series Truck (Chevrolet & GMC)

GM TSB #57-64-03 Page 250

This TSB describes a condition in 1995 trucks where the starter may continue to run or crank after the ignition switch is turned off because of a ground in the #6 circuit (usually a purple wire) which allows current to be fed back through the solenoid's pull-in windings to ground. This holds the plunger in, which keeps the starter running. The repair for this condition is to disconnect the #6 lead at the "S" terminal of the solenoid, then check for any resistance in the line. If there is anything other than infinite, then find the ground in this circuit and eliminate it.

This TSB talks about the starter running even after the key is released on 2003 models equipped with the 5.3L engine. This is a normal condition, as the PCM takes over control of the "start" operation and has a set time that it will crank the engine. It is possible that the engine may require more time to start because of the specific fuel pump used on the 5.3L engine, therefore the operator may release the key prior to actual start, and yet the starter may still crank. This is the proper action for this system, and no repairs should be attempted.

The appendix starting on page 503 also has a lot of useful information.
