Technicians should take some special precautions with 1995 and later model years, so that the ECM or other sensitive electronics are not damaged. If your shop owns a "booster" or charger, make sure that the voltage output of these devices does not exceed 16 volts. The ignition switch must be switched to the off position while a battery charger is connected.
Caution: Do not ever try to start the vehicle while the battery is charging.
Volkswagen also has seen returned ECMs that have been damaged when a technician disconnects the unit while the ignition is energized. Also, make sure that the ECM connectors are secure to avoid damage to electronic components.
Volkswagen No Start
The starter motor of all model years of Cabriolet, Rabbit, Golf and Jetta with the 010 transmission may not engage during restart when the engine is hot.
The starter motor is heated up by the engine. During cranking, the voltage at terminal 50 of the starter solenoid must be at least 11 volts. This value will not be reached at times by older vehicles.
Service Procedure
Check the battery power and ground connections to the engine/transmission and connection to the starter motor for tightness and corrosion. Repair if necessary. If all connections are in order or if repair of the connections does not correct this condition, installation of a starter relay kit (VW # 191-911-251) maybe necessary to correct the problem.
