"No Shim" Starters
February, 1999

Delco has produced a few different versions of the same starters, some require the use of a 2mm shim and some don't. The vehicles involved are six cylinder gas engines and 6.2L diesel engines. The part numbers are 3764, 6339, 6343, 6415, and 6424. Some of the drive end housings actually have the words "no shim" stamped on them when they were manufactured. The 2mm shim is used to attain the correct distance from the center of the armature shaft to the pad mount surface.
Genco measures each of the drive end housings and marks them accordinly. Units marked with blue ink require the use of a 2mm shim and units marked with red ink do not require the use of a 2mm shim. We have also attached a notice to the drive end explaning the replacement procedure.
