Testing Mazda Protege and Miata alternators with P.D. terminals is extremely important.

First to tell if it is a P.D. type, use your digital voltmeter (DVOM) and set on diode check. Connect the negative lead to the battery terminal of the alternator.
Connect the positive lead to P terminal. Reading should be 0.9-1.1 volts. Move positive lead to the D terminal. Reading should be 0.5-0.7 volts.
On an SL unit the readings are higher.

DO NOT USE TEST LIGHT
(DIGITAL VOLTMETER ONLY)

Next at the terminal plug, with vehicle running measure voltage at the D terminal. The voltage should be greater than 0 volts and may be as high as battery voltage. If so then the computer is working properly. At the P terminal there should be no voltage.
