Starter Cranking Time

January, 2003

Cranking time should be limited to at most 10 seconds, and that's pretty long. Excessive cranking will damage a starter and can weaken wires and take life from a battery.

With fuel injection being the main source for fuel delivery in today's vehicles, it must be in good working order with good fuel pressure. Low fuel pressure can cause excessive cranking and starter failure. Low fuel pressure can be caused by a bad fuel pump or dirty/worn fuel injectors.

If your vehicle has a long cranking time check your fuel system.
