Dual Ford Alternator Vehicles
Part Numbers: 7796 and 7799
These units are used together in vehicles with a 7.3L diesel engine and optional "Ambulance Package". The 7796 is the top (primary) alternator and the 7799 is the bottom (auxiliary) alternator. The alternators work independently through internal voltage regulators, which are monitored by the PCM. PCM control is limited to disabling the lower (7799) alternator during glow plug operation to avoid over voltage to the glow plug circuit. If the PCM or the glow plug system timer is defective the lower alternator might be turned off prematurely causing the upper alternator to be overworked. Careful diagnosis of these dual alternator systems is essential. If the upper alternator is burnt or has blown diodes, it could have been caused the above mentioned problems.
